Engaging Content is Key — But What Is It?

3 Aug

Content, it seems, is still king.

This might sound like a no-brainer, but engaging content is a “must have” for a popular Facebook Page, according to Inside Facebook.

The one constant throughout all popular pages, whether they have 5,000 or 100,000 fans, seems to be quality of content. Whether it’s a celebrity, band, television show or a major brand, the page must be engaging. There must be something there to make a person want to share that page in his or her Facebook news feed.

Well, yeah.

This idea has been itching my brain for a while, and a Tweet from Boston marketer Rachel Levy intensified the itch:

The biggest problem with Facebook pages, in my opinion, is that many don’t “amplify” what’s on the corporate experience. In other words, they don’t give me anything new, different, or better.

Rachel’s right, of course: Steering traffic away from your website is risky business, especially if you’re steering it to a ho-hum Facebook page.

Which brings us back to content…

What makes compelling, engaging content? Adding photos or videos to a text-heavy page makes the page more engaging, but is “better than bland” really the goal?

Here’s what I think makes content engaging:

  • Touches an emotional nerve
  • Tells a story
  • Challenges us to see the world differently
  • Illuminates contrasting points of view
  • Puts things in perspective
  • Expresses abstract ideas in pictures and sound
  • Exposes our vulnerabilities

What do you think makes content engaging? What makes a good Facebook page? A good blog post? A good conversation? A good relationship?
